In Texas, you can absolutely donate a car with expired registration. You do NOT need to renew the tags, pay back registration fees, or get the vehicle inspected before donating. As long as you have a valid Texas title in your name, Rev Up Giving can accept your vehicle, schedule a free tow anywhere in the state, and provide a tax receipt benefiting Heritage for the Blind.
Here’s how it really works for a Texas donor with lapsed registration: current tags are not required for the donation transfer. What matters is that the title is in your name and free of major liens. The vehicle doesn’t have to run, pass inspection, or even be safe to drive—we send a professional tow truck at no cost to you, whether you’re in Houston’s Heights, Dallas–Fort Worth, San Antonio, Austin, El Paso, the Rio Grande Valley, or out in the Hill Country. Once the tow driver picks up the car and you sign the title, responsibility for the vehicle moves to the charity. You’ll simply notify TxDMV of the transfer so future fees, tickets, or tolls aren’t your problem, then use your tax receipt when you file.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Confirm you have your Texas title
Find your Texas vehicle title and make sure your name is listed as the owner and there are no active liens, or that any prior lien is stamped “released.” You do not need current inspection or registration for this. If you’re in places like Plano, Katy, Lubbock, or McAllen, the requirements are the same across Texas—title matters, tags don’t.
2. Tell us about your unregistered vehicle
Go online or call Rev Up Giving and share a few basics: year, make, model, where the car is sitting, and that the registration is expired. We’ll let you know on the spot if we can accept it (in most cases, yes) and answer any Texas-specific questions you have about expired tags or parking concerns.
3. Schedule your free Texas tow pickup
We arrange a free tow truck, usually within a few days, from your location—whether your vehicle is in a downtown Dallas garage, a San Antonio driveway, an Austin apartment lot, or a rural property outside Waco. The car does not need to move or run. You won’t pay a cent for towing, storage, or processing.
4. Sign the title and hand over the keys (if any)
At pickup, you’ll sign the Texas title over following the driver’s instructions. If you still have the keys or remote, great—if not, we can usually still accept it. Once the tow truck leaves, the vehicle is no longer your responsibility. From Houston to Amarillo, the process is the same: no trip to the county tax office needed for registration renewal.
5. Notify TxDMV and keep your tax-deduction receipt
After pickup, file a Texas Vehicle Transfer Notification with TxDMV (online or by mail) to document that you donated the car and stop future liability. Then watch for your tax receipt from Rev Up Giving for Heritage for the Blind. You can generally deduct at least $500; for donations over $500, use IRS Form 1098-C when filing.
6. Feel good knowing your old car is helping people
Your problem car with expired registration is now off your hands and put to work helping Heritage for the Blind provide services for people who are blind or visually impaired. Instead of paying back fees or worrying about tickets, you’ve cleared space at home and created a charitable tax deduction for yourself.
Potential complications to watch for
Missing or damaged Texas title
Tip: If you’ve lost your Texas title or it’s badly damaged, TxDMV requires a replacement before donation. Contact your county tax office in Harris, Travis, Bexar, Dallas, or your local county to request a duplicate title. Once it arrives in your name, we can usually move forward even if the registration is still expired.
Active lien still showing on the title
Tip: If your title lists a lender, Texas treats that as a lien until it’s clearly released. Even if you paid off the loan years ago, the lien must be stamped or signed off by the lender. Track down a lien release letter or updated title first. Without that release, we can’t transfer ownership, no matter what the registration status is.
Car stored where towing is tricky
Tip: Vehicles tucked into tight apartment garages in places like Uptown Dallas, Midtown Houston, or downtown Austin can require special tow equipment or scheduling. Tell us exactly where the car is and whether it rolls or has flat tires. With clear details, we can match the right tow truck and avoid delays or failed pickup attempts.
Forgetting to file a Texas Vehicle Transfer Notification
Tip: Once you donate, Texas strongly recommends filing a Vehicle Transfer Notification with TxDMV. It’s quick and protects you from future tolls, tickets, or tax bills tied to the old plates. Even though registration was expired, this step shows the state the car is no longer yours and closes the loop on your responsibility.
